Watch Me Design my Fashion Collection- Part 3

This post is part of a 4 part series in which I capture my design process for creating a clothing collection. I share how I create a collection concept or theme, sketch designs, comment on prototype samples, and review final production samples.

Click on the video above to watch the process, or keep reading.

The theme behind this group is 2-piece matching sets in novelty fabrics combining sexy, sporty, and feminine elements.

Here are links to the rest of this series:

SATIN CAMI + BOXER SHORT

Sketch

I combined the luxe satin fabric with sporty elements for an “athelisure” look.

The seaming at the bust provides better shaping, while the smocking at the back panel allows for a tight fit with the benefit of stretch and comfort.

For the shorts I was inspired by boxing and running shorts: a tulip hem that split for range of motion, an interior shorts lining in knit fabric, and an elastic waistband construction with a flat front panel. I prefer flat panels at the front because I find it slimming.

Tech Pack

The straps have adjustable rings + sliders. I like including this detail because the measurement between the shoulder and bust can vary.

Prototype Review

I scooped out the neckline for a more flattering fit at the bust.

Production Sample

Here is the final production sample styled together and separately. Check out the product listing here.

DRAPED CORSET + SKIRT

Sketch

I wanted to create a matching set that was unique and sexy.

Top Details:
Interior boning for a corset-like fit
Mesh panel
Adjustable straps
Back zipper
Pleating

Skirt Details:
Side slit
Invisible zipper at side seam
Asymmetric pocket
Pleating at front seam
Darts at back waist

Tech Pack

Note the mesh boned bodice detail.

Prototype Review

Pleating and draping can take a lot of work to get right. I drew over the initial prototype to show how I wanted the pleats to drape.

Production Sample

Here is the final production sample styled together and separately. I love how the top can be worn casually with jeans. Check out the product listing here.

VEGAN LEATHER SMOCKED SET

Sketch

With ruching, ruffles, smocking, and eyelet detailing, this design was quite romantic and feminine.

Tech Pack

Prototype Review

I cancelled the eyelet detail because it was too tricky for this style.

Here is the first prototype. I dropped the neckline, adjusted the ruffle detail, increased the height of the smocked panel, and adjusted the fit of the shorts.

Here is the final production sample styled together and separately. Check out the product listing here.
