3 Step Tutorial: How to Draw Hair for Fashion Illustration

Hairstyles give a mood, or vibe, to your fashion illustrations and provide customer and occasion context.

For example, you may draw a fancy up-do hairstyle for an eveningwear line or beach waves for a swimwear line.

To practice drawing hair, print the free face template, and follow the below simple steps:

Drawing from photos is the best way to improve. Before we begin, find a photo of a hairstyle to draw. Check out my pinterest board where I collect photos of hair to reference for fashion illustration.

1) Define the General Shape

A. Start by drawing the hairline and face-framing pieces

B. Define the general shape or outline of the hair

2) Divide the shape

A. Visualize the rhythm, or patterns of movement, of the hair. How does the hair fall from the scalp and move around the skull?

B. Divide the shape into large segments, based on the rythym of the hair

C. Add some strands into each segment to give the hair texture. Each strand should follow the movement pattern of the hair

3) Add Dimension

A. Add shadows to the roots, around hair segments, and background shapes (I like to add shading by the neck)

B. Add highlights to the crown of the head and foreground shapes

C. Add baby hairs and fly-away hairs for more dimension
