If you’ve read Fashion Design Strategy and Tactics, you know trend research is a big part of my design process.
The time has come to sift through Fall fashion shows to gather trend insight. I look at almost every show, scanning for patterns in design and details.
So far, these are stand out trends from Fall 2020 fashion week. I’ve taken loose notes (it’s a work in progress.) I’ll be continuously updating this post as shows go live.
I save all images to Fall 2020 pinterest board. Follow for updates.
If you’ve spotted any new trends that aren’t mentioned here, let’s talk about it in the comments section :)
1. Midi Dresses + Skirts
Emphasis on sunburst + micro pleats, ruffles, asymmetrical hems, 1920s + 1930s style dropped waist, bias cut, flounces, column dresses. Styled with tall boots, wide-leg pants, or tights. The low horizon proportion of this trend could indicate that tunic lengths may be up-trending, opposing the dominating trend of high waists and cropped tops.
2. Aran Knits, Fairisle Sweater, Ribs
Chunky, cozy, patterned, round yoke, volume at sleeve cap, statement sleeve, flower intarsia, head-to-toe ribbed looks
3. Ruffles, Ruching, Tiers
Praire + victorian styles. Lots of small buttons
4. Volume Sleeves
Volume at sleeve caps, ruffles, new shapes, 80’s influence. Victoria Beckham show had tons of draped sleeves.
5. Leather Dressing
More leather on the runway than usual in all product categories (pants, dresses, skirts, jackets.) Emphasis on head-to-toe leather looks and leather culottes.
6. Cropped Culottes
Below the knee + knee-length shorts styled with high boots. Lots of leather shorts. Return of tights. New volume at hem
7. Tights + stockings
Colored tights, lace, mesh, etc. With midi dresses + culottes, tights help cover up.
8. Roses + flowers
Flower intarsia in sweaters, rose prints, flower embellishments + appliqué
9. Multi-media fringe
Leather, suede, rhinestones, beaded, pearls, polyester, etc.
10. Ecru
Soft creme head to toe looks
Honestly, I’m still debating on which trend gets this 10th spot.
